Sweetheart of a Dance

Seventh and eighth grade Herders had the opportunity to dance their cares away last week.
On the night of Feb. 19, dozens of kids from Glenrock Junior High met in the commons of the shared high school building as the student council put on their Sweetheart Dance.
For the night, the common space was filled will various Valentine Day decorations, and plenty of pink and red balloons. In addition to the decorations, students also had the chance to partake of cookies and punch – red, of course.
While there was little dancing the first few minutes of the hour-and-half event, the students seemed to be getting the most enjoyment out of playing with the balloons, which was fine by the teachers chaperoning the event – since the entire point was for the students to have some fun together.
Once the students started to request songs however, the event really began to kick off.
It started with a group of girls requesting the popular country track, “Fishing in the Dark,” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. The students were soon performing choreographed dance moves to the song. By the end of the tune every kid in attendance was on the floor performing the choreo, practically covering the length with dancing. From there, every song played had a majority of the students busting a move and enjoying each other’s company.
By the end of the night, dozens of dances had been performed and plenty of fun had been had, which makes it all worth it to special education teacher and junior high student council sponsor Ruby Coats.
“It’s why I do what I do, because it’s good to see them outside the classroom having fun, interacting with each other.”
