From an entertaining round-robin basketball clash between law enforcement and the fire department, to the tasty chili offerings in the cafeteria, no one left disappointed at the annual Guns & Hoses event May 4 at Glenrock High School.
Every participant in the games – and the cooks behind the chili – are all hometown winners, but the biggest winner of the night was  the host: Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
The charity basketball game and bowls of chili raised $2,419 for the 19-member SADD team.
“The members have decided to split the proceeds to help a staff member who has a family in need of financial assistance,” SADD sponsor Dawn Martinez said. “The other half will go towards next year’s SADD team to make sure they have funding to kick off all the future activities such as mental health awareness, seatbelt safety, substance abuse awareness and of course post prom.”
THE GAMES
While no final scores were kept – because no one could lose on an important night like Guns & Hoses – there were three teams that edged out the other. The Glenrock Police Department beat the Converse County Sheriff’s Office and the Glenrock Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD), while CCSO got by GVFD.
“The games went great. Of course, we all wanted to win but while our patches may look different, we work as a team day to day to help each other and those we serve as one team,” Glenrock Police Chief Colter Felton said. “Once everyone caught their wind, they had a lot of laughs and smiles with fresh stories to tell.  In Glenrock, we are heavily involved with our community at every opportunity. We look forward to opportunities like this to let people see our human side, and boy did they.”
The huge success of the event was extra special for the chief beyond his title and badge.
“I live and serve in one of the best communities, and It is truly my honor. Since my first few shifts here, I couldn’t imagine going anywhere else due to the kindness I’m shown daily. Our citizens are truly just extended family,” Felton said.

GOOD OL’ CHILI
“While the basketball games were a success, the chili cook-off was also a great success. Sergeant Tesdall and Officer Pierce dedicated their day off to taste testing and bringing their best.,” Felton said.
Like the basketball games, there were no losers when it comes to chili ... just a list of winners. Those included Rosies (1st Green; 1st red, 1st white), Mr Makelky (2nd white), fire dept. (2nd green), CJ Toner (2nd red) and GPD (3rd red)
