Reaching for victory

The Herders continue to show marked improvement as the team progresses into its final weeks.

The rocky season has kept Glenrock in the middle of the pack when viewed by their record, but watching the games reveals a different standard of measure.

Aggressiveness, willingness to attack the rim and percentage of made shots were fairly evident against the Bulldogs on Friday night.

The 3A Wheatland team didn’t let the Herd off easy, holding the local boys to a narrow 65-63 victory.

Freethrows is where the Herd really shined on Friday with 22 out of 24 attempts made.

Logan Downs sank five of five attempts during the game for a perfect record.

Close behind was Tucker Bopp with seven out of eight, and Payton Steinmetz landed 7 out of nine free shots.

The Herders showed a lot of consistency from one quarter to another, scoring 18 in the first, 16 in the second, 16 in the third and 15 in the fourth.

The season has one more week of regular play for the Herders to try to earn a higher seed for the Regional showdown.

Sitting at a 3-3 conference record has them finishing up the week at No. 4 in 2A Northeast.

Pine Bluffs is the current leader in the division with a 7-0 conference record. But that is backed up with a 20-0 overall record. The Hornets are certainly the ones to shoot for going into the postseason.

The final week of play for the Herders will be on the road at Lusk with the boys playing at 7 p.m. after the ladies 6 p.m. game. The last time they faced Lusk, the Herd beat them 53-23. They will return home for the last game of regular season play against Southeast on Saturday. Southeast beat the Rock 62-49 just a few weeks ago on the road.
