Owning The Day: Wrestlers pin nine titles to bring regular season to impressive finish in Saratoga

If it was possible to gain any more momentum for postseason than it already has, consider it locked in for the Glenrock High School wrestling program. The boys and girls brought the regular season to a stunning finish over the weekend accomplishing nine first places Feb. 14 at the Carbon County Invite in Saratoga.

It wasn’t big like most of the events this season, but there was still plenty of competition to use it as prep for regionals against Big Piney, Dubois, H.E.M., Lusk, Moorcroft, Rawlins, Saratoga, Shoshoni and Wyoming Indian. The GHS boys won the title with 159.5 points in which everyone placed and titles were captured by Nick Ticknor,Brody Allen, Hunter Rivera, Kelton Stewart, Khanan Caston, Preston Sorenson, Brady Calmes  and Gene Hershley.

Ticknor (12-6) was the best in the 113-pound weight class where he won all the three matches for first place. His first order of business was getting by teammate Maximus Kellogg by fall at 1:58.

Ticknor advanced to face Asher Vannett (Saratoga) and won via pin in 1:02. The Herder was fantastic in the final match where he defeated Tate Zeller (Saratoga) by an 18-2 tech fall at 2:16.

Allen (18-1) only knows how to win and he did it twice for gold in the 126 division. He beat Peyton Stansell (Big Piney) by fall at 1:46 and finished with a 17-1 tech fall against teammate Rian Selby at 2:56.

Hunter Rivera (10-8) was untouchable at 138 as he rallied to take first. He was stunned in the opening round where fell short Galloway Oleary (Saratoga) by fall in 2:49.

Rivera bounced back to stay alive in the tourney by taking down teammate Jesus Garcia by fall in 0:20 and scored a forfeit against Jaxon Rothenberger. He finished by winning four straight as he beat Maverick Valdes (Rawlins) via fall in 1:13 and pinned Jett McNees (H.E.M.) at 0:59.

Stewart (17-3) has unleashed a fantastic season which continued by winning two more times to win the 150 division. He pinned Destry Olsen (H.E.M.) 4-14 at 1:53 and defeated Skyler Pickett (Saratoga) by fall at 0:49 for the title.

At 165, Caston (11-7) was the best over the weekend in capturing top honors. He took down Anthony Martinez (Rawlins) by fall at 2:27 and scored a 24-6 tech fall against teammate Manny Coulter.

Preston Sorensen’s (20-4) super senior season continued by winning a complete 190 weight class. His run started by defeating Gideon Cyrus (Dubois) via fall in 1:00.

Preston Sorensen advanced to pin Saki Meador (Big Piney) at 0:52 and got past his brother Kyler Sorensen. That led to the finals where he got teammate Joel Williams by forfeit.

The fantastic year unleashed by Calmes (20-2) meant two more wins and another first place among the 215s. He made it happen by taking down teammate Aden Evans by fall twice at 1:14 and 1:43, respectively. 

Gene Hershley (10-7) beat the same foe twice as well to win the 285 weight class. He took down Kian Pelham (Big Piney) by fall at 3:24 and did so again at 3:10.

Also competing were Maximus Kellogg (113, third place),Rian Selby (126, second place), Jesus Garcia (138, fifth place), Wes Holman (144, second place), Noah Murray (144, fifth place),Porter Mathson (150, fifth place), Skyron Granaas (150, third place). Manny Coulter (165, third place), Kyler Sorensen (190, third place) and Joel Williams (190, second place), and Aden Evans (215, second place).

 

Girls

Rawlins won the team title with 87.5 points. Glenrock was second among six teams with 51.5 links and H.E.M. took third at 23.

Gillian Holman (13-5) continued her farewell tour by capturing first place in the 130-pound division.  The road to gold started by taking down Lillian Neil (Dubois) courtesy of a fall at 1:18.

Gillian Holman, a member of the first official girls team at GHS, unleashed 16-0 tech fall against Sophie Laird (Rawlins) at 4:18. She took a non contest versus Malorey Lawrence to end the weekend

Stella Kendall (5-6) took second in the 190 division. She won by fall over teammate Silvia Cretarola in 1:32 and fell short to Kamia Runyan (Big Piney by fall in 2:35.

Lucy Ticknor (11-8) placed third at 115 pounds in her final trip to Saratoga. She opened by defeating teammate Miranda Gardner by fall at 3:48.

The Herder fell short in the next two matches. She finished strong by scoring an 8-0 major decision over Jazlynn Sheets (Rawlins) and beat Alaina McNees (H.E.M.) via medical forfeit.

At 130, Malorey Lawrence (4-3) took home three overall. Her day included taking down Lillian Neil (Dubois) by pin at 1:56.

Silvia Cretarola (1-9) was third in the 190 division. She scored a win over teammate Silvia Cretarola at 1:32.

Miranda Gardner (4-12) took sixth among the 115s. She defeated Alaina McNees (H.E.M.) by medical forfeit.
