Letters to the Editor: Ex-employees at CCL had ‘passion,’ dedication

I am writing to express my serious concern regarding the future of the Glenrock Library and the recent, questionable termination of two dedicated full-time employees: Erin and Jennifer.

These women were not just library staff — they helped shape the library into a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for all members of the community. Their work extended well beyond their job descriptions, and their passion for serving Glenrock has always been clear to anyone who visited the library.

What’s even more troubling is the context surrounding their dismissal. Approximately six weeks ago, I visited the library and immediately noticed how warm the building was. When I asked Erin about it, she responded with positivity and professionalism, explaining that the air conditioning was being worked on and would soon be functional again. Despite the clear discomfort, she remained upbeat — but I could see that the heat was taking a toll.

Everyone in the community has known that the library’s air conditioning has not been functioning properly. This has not been a secret. Erin did not make any public statements about it; instead, a concerned Facebook post was made by her daughter — not in malice or for attention, but out of genuine concern for the patrons, especially the children, and for the staff working in those conditions. Erin did not like, comment on, or share the post. Jennifer hadn’t even seen it until it was brought to her attention by someone else. Still, she was not afforded the opportunity to discuss the matter with Erin before being summoned by the library board — and ultimately dismissed.

In addition, it has come to my attention that this is not a new issue. Over the years, the library has had ongoing problems with its air conditioning. Yet at no point was there a clear or proactive communication from the library board to the public about the status of the repairs or plans to address the issue. The community was left in the dark — uncertain whether the issue was being addressed at all, and unsure what kind of environment they might walk into on any given day.

This situation has left many in our community shocked and disappointed. While I understand the library may be an at-will employer and legally within its rights to make staffing decisions, I ask: is this just?

Erin and Jennifer have served this library and our town with integrity, dedication, and care. Their abrupt and disproportionate termination — particularly under these circumstances — sends the wrong message about how we value public servants and the trust between leadership and community.

I respectfully urge you to reconsider this decision, and to reflect on the values that our public institutions should stand for: fairness, transparency, and service to the public.

 Sincerely,

Melissa Rivera,

Glenrock
