The Glenrock girls’ basketball team went 0-2 this past week but continue to improve on the defensive side of the ball.
The Lady Herders were defeated by the Lusk Tigers 45-38 Friday night and the Pine Bluffs Hornets 46-24 Saturday evening.
Glenrock went down early 18-6 to Lusk before making defensive adjustments to slow the Tigers down.
The girls were able to fight their way back but came up short in the end.
Coach Chris Gray decided to use the team’s speed to their advantage, swarming the ball with defenders to try and force turnovers and contested shots at the basket.
In the game against Pine Bluffs, the strategy paid off with some mixed results. The speed of the Lady Herders allowed them to double ball handlers while still closing out on the inevitable open shooter, but it also led to defenders being out of position and committing fouls putting the team’s best players on the bench for valuable minutes.
“Even though we have speed and we try to take advantage of that, what we have is young speed,” Gray said. “Sometimes they make dumb fouls and then they’re sitting on the bench with me. I told them today, we aren’t young anymore we’ve played 13 games now. They have to start figuring this out.”
Despite some of the fouls, holding a team as talented as Pine Bluffs to 46 points is very respectable.
Glenrock did what they needed to on that side of the floor, but could get nothing going offensively, especially in the second half.
For Gray, all that matters is what’s ahead.
“We have two very winnable games this next week. We have to get after it and have a good week of practice. If we can do that then we will be ok.”
