They sang a duet together with grace, but it was the individual performances of seniors Emmaline Cotton and Savanna Mitchell that earned them both the “Trophy of Awesome” at the Glenrock Junior/Senior High School Talent Show May 3.

Held in the auditorium of Glenrock Intermediate School, the event was small with only four student singers and musicians, who performed in front of an intimate audience of friends and family.

But the event was no less captivating.

Each student singer gave a raw and emotional performance, accompanied either by a prerecorded backing track or their own instrument.

Eighth-grader Rikaela Timmons opened the show with a cover of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” which she sang with a backing track.

Freshman Peyton Phillips then busted out her acoustic guitar and song two songs with country twang: “Suds in the Bucket” by Sara Evans and “Grandpa” by The Judds.

“That was my sister!” her brother proudly yelled from the audience after she finished.

Senior Emmaline Cotton then came on stage with her ukulele and sang the Celtic love song “A Fond Kiss.”

Senior Savanna Mitchell then joined Cotton on stage and the two of them sang a duet of “Flight.”

Finally, Mitchell’s father Brandon joined her on stage and accompanied her on acoustic guitar as she confidently sang “Jolene” by Dolly Parton.

In an interview following the determination of the winners, both Cotton and Mitchell said they were happy with their performances.

Cotton said her song idea came from her love of women’s Celtic music, while Mitchell said she’s always enjoyed playing music with her dad.
