New math. Old math. For some,  any type of math is complicated once algebra has been conquered and advanced arithmetic is a challenge, but not for a group of Glenrock’s junior high and high school students who recently took on mathematics like they’d just found the most amazing activity in the world.

Students from Glenrock Jr./Sr. High School attended the Casper Region’s Wolsborn-Drazovich State Math Contest Feb. 25 at Casper College, where they attacked five timed math tests to test their skills in their region.

“It’s actually five separate tests at 20 minutes each, and each one has 10 questions on it,” Glenrock High School math teacher Sierra Galicia said Tuesday.

Galicia said the students practiced in math class for two weeks prior to the big contest by studying previous math competition tests from prior years.

“We did them in class as it benefits everyone to study the material. The tests cover a little bit of everything – statistics, probability, geometry. For the higher levels they covered calculus, trigonometry, algebra and geometry,” she said.

The kids were very excited about the competition and were great at taking the initiative to study on their own, she made sure to mention.

The students enjoyed their time at the competition.

“The trip was a lot of fun. We made a whole day of it. We stayed at the college and after the competition was over and we had lunch in the college cafeteria. It’s a nice treat for the students,” Galicia said.

The tests are hard – challenging students to use analyzing skills and to be critical thinkers, she said.

“The actual problems on the tests are more about problem-solving. The information has to be analyzed. The students have to come up with their own solutions. We don’t necessarily do problems like those on the tests at the contest like that every day in class. The tests also help prepare students for the ACT and other tests, like WYTOP,” she said.

Most of the students in eleventh grade had never seen calculus problems before.

“The tests were hard,” she said.
