Library news for the week of Nov. 4, 2020

November is upon us! The Converse County Library has wonderful things coming up to celebrate this cozy family season! We continue with our regularly scheduled activities for kids and teens, such as Storytime Live on Facebook each Wednesday at 10 am, Storytime on Demand in the library for single family groups each Tuesday through Saturday, and a new DIY take-home craft for the kids ready to go each Monday! There is a STEAM project each Saturday as well packed with fun learning experiences.

For the teens, we have weekly board game night on Thursdays from 6-8 pm, socially distanced, and a D & D Meetup each Friday from 4-7 pm. Please check our weekly ad in this paper, or our Glenrock Library Facebook page for details on our activities for all ages.

For the time being, we are not holding a lot of in-house programs, or scheduling our meeting rooms for groups, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. We regret the inconvenience this may cause! As soon as it’s safe to do so, we will resume those activities. And, in that vein, we have put our Food for Thought Cookbook Club on pause as well. We met outside, socially distanced, during the summer and early Fall, but now that the weather has turned, we decided to take a break for a couple of months, and see what happens with the virus. Also, we have switched our Book & Brew meetings back to Zoom until otherwise noted.

Upcoming Adult events include a Chalk Board Painting Class on Thursday, November 12th from 6-8 pm via Zoom. Join us to learn this fun new artform!

The colorful Chalk Board reminds us to “Live in the Moment!” It would be a great addition to any home, or would make a lovely Christmas gift. You will receive a Zoom invitation and complete materials kit for the craft, as long as you sign up by November 10th. If you don’t have the ability to access a computer or the Internet at home, we can make arrangements for you to view the class in the library. Please sign up for this free, fun craft with Tamara at 436-2573, or tlehner@conversecountylibrary.org.

Next up is a magical look at the Indian Festival of Light, Diwali! With the help of Cindy Stimson, who has lived in India, we will learn about this ancient tradition that, according to Wikipedia, “symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance." This would be a great event for adults and families alike.

The Welcome the Light with Diwali Zoom event will be on Saturday, November 14th at 6 pm. You need to sign up for this free, fun and educational event by Thursday, November 12th, so that we may get your Goody Bag to you! It will contain a “diya,” or light, some traditional treats of the holiday, and a surprise. We will also share some recipes for delicious traditional Indian dishes in case you want to try them out for the event. Please register with Tamara at the phone number or email listed above.

The 17th of November is “Little Mermaid Day,” to mark the1989 release of the beloved Disney movie. To honor the date, Converse County Library Glenrock will present an “Ariel Aglow” Lighted Wine Bottle Zoom Craft Class, free for adults. Please register with Tamara by November 13th so that we can send your Zoom invitation and get your materials kit to you in time.

Lastly, in honor of the Thanksgiving Holiday this month, we will present a Gratitude Journaling Zoom Class on Thursday, November 19th at 6 pm. Join us for a free look at the value and benefits one can derive from keeping a journal which marks all of the things we are grateful for. Again, please register for the class by the 19th for your Zoom invitation, and provide your own journal.

Instead of a quote this week, I’d like to share a poem to celebrate the coming of this special time of year:

“November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.”
