The Herder boys showed their grit over the weekend in a pair of tough conference games, splitting the contests to sit firmly in second place in the 2A Southeast.

Glenrock 56, Lusk 47

Streaky 3-point shooting finally fell the way of Glenrock in a back-and-forth game against Lusk on Friday. The Herders came out on top, taking down the Tigers 56-47.

The teams appeared evenly matched from the get-go, with the Tigers hitting shots from the arc and Herder senior Terrin Fauber controlling the paint offense. Lusk kept firing from deep, knocking in shots on their second and third opportunities as long rebounds kept falling into Tiger claws. Glenrock (3-6, 1-1 2A Southeast) played perhaps its cleanest opening quarter of the season, maintaining possession of the ball and playing straight-up defense, avoiding sending the Tigers to the line even as the Herders fell into a 9-12 hole at the end of the period.

Fauber continued to work in the second, grinding in the low post and working a two-man game with Logan Jones out of the high post, generating good looks that took a few possessions to fall. Lusk (5-7, 0-1 2A Southeast) continued to pile up offensive rebounds in the period, slowly growing the lead as wide as six before a couple of buckets from Jones sent the teams to the locker rooms in the same position they were in after the first quarter, with the Herders down by three.

Lusk came out of the halftime break rolling, finding buckets in the paint while the Herder offense struggled to convert after the opening possession. It wasn’t until Jones hit a slick reverse layup that the buckets started falling for the Herders, but Jones, leading the comeback, rolled his ankle on a steal attempt as time was running down and had to hit the bench.

It turns out a little rest was all Jones needed. Hobbling his way back into the game in the fourth period, Jones hit back-to-back-to-back triples as the Herders high-pressure defense forced Lusk into mental mistakes. Glenrock capitalized as a limping Jones put the team on his back, putting up 15 of his team-leading 22 points in the final frame while going a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final two minutes to ice the game for Glenrock.

Fauber and Jones led the way for the Herders, with Fauber notching a 21-point 14-rebound double-double in the win, while Jones had 22 points, five boards and three assists.

Pine Bluffs 55, Glenrock 25

It was a tale of two games for Glenrock as they welcomed Pine Bluffs into The Rock on Saturday for Game Two of the conference opening weekend. The top-ranked Hornets controlled the game wire to wire, dropping the Herders 55-25.

The Hornets (11-2, 1-0 2A Southeast) brought heavy pressure early, blitzing the Herder ball handlers as soon as they crossed the halfcourt line and using their length to bat away passes that Glenrock had completed against less lanky teams. The Herders wouldn’t take their first shot attempt until nearly 4 minutes had passed in the opening quarter, and nearly 5 minutes would pass before they got their first bucket. Jones finally cracked the seal on the hoop for Glenrock with 3:20 to play in the first frame, dropping in a 3-pointer to make the score 3-17. The Hornets hit a triple of their own as the buzzer sounded to get a 19-point lead going into the second.

Fauber showed off some good handles and passing ability in the early going of the second quarter for the Herders, but soon found himself on the bench in foul trouble as the Hornets targeted the senior big man. Pine Bluffs kept up the energy on the defensive end, taking the ball away from the Herders and Glenrock hit halftime down 10-37.

It was more of the same in the second half, with Hornets forward Stuart Lerwick, one of the top scoring and rebounding threats in 2A, continuing to carve space out down low. The Herders were able to string together a few possessions as the game came to a close thanks to some good work in the post by Fauber and junior Hunter McCullough, but it was too little, too late, as both coaches finished out the game with their junior varsity players. McCullough led the way for the Herd with five points and seven rebounds in the loss.
